The Kilimanjaro Resource Center is a unique place to stay designed to welcome scientists, researchers, eco-volunteers and ecotourists in the heart of the Maasai communities inhabiting the Enduimet Wildlife Conservation Area in northern Tanzania.

The Kilimanjaro Resource Center (KRC) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization. The KRC was founded by Emmanuel J. Silayo, Managing Director, supported by the Swiss Association Terre et Faune, chaired by Dr. Catherine Tschanen.

Rental

KRC is based in northern Tanzania, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, in the village of Lerang’wa, one of the 11 villages that make up the  Enduimet Wildlife Management Area.

Lerang’wa village

From an ecological point of view, this area serves as a link between the Mkomazi, Arusha and Kilimanjaro National Parks in Tanzania and the Tsavo – Amboseli ecosystem in Kenya.

The Enduimet region is crossed by the last elephant migration corridor between southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.  It is therefore of paramount importance for the conservation and protection of this endangered species.

Context

Composed of 60% Maasai cattle herders, the population of Enduimet has been led over time to settle and turn to subsistence agriculture.

This sedentarization of the population in a wildlife conservation area has led to many environmental problems: overgrazing, conflict with wild animals and local communities, deforestation accelerating drought in this area already very impacted by global warming. This has led to the impoverishment of communities and a strong pressure on wild animals.

Purpose and Objectives

  1. Improve coexistence between humans and wildlife, especially elephants, in the Enduimet ecosystem.
  2. Strengthen anti-poaching operations.
  3. Increase the livelihoods of marginalized local communities, thereby reducing their dependence and impact on natural resources.

To help us protect elephants, preserve Maasai culture and regenerate the ecosystem of the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, you can:

  1. Get involved in our research and development activities.
  2. Make a unique ecotourism experience by coming to stay at the center.
  3. Sponsor our projects or make a donation.

Our team

KRC has a multi-disciplinary team of seasoned professionals experienced in community development, environmental conservation; natural resources management; wildlife conservation; tourism and forestry.
